Summer Style

What could be better in the summer than having fun in the sun? How about relaxing in style and comfort on your own porch, veranda or backyard?

Adding pizzazz and elegance to these areas is easier than you think.

Create a Fun and Creative Front Entrance

Curb appeal is always important; your front entrance is what visitors will notice the most especially while waiting for you to answer the door. Make it more inviting by adding greenery and flowers to planters on either side of the front door and in strategic areas on the porch and steps. Use local plants to match your landscaping. Or make a big statement by painting your entrance door a fabulous bright color.

Another way to welcome visitors is to add an arbor or pergola near the front door and decorate it with a beautiful climbing flower or vine. There’s nothing better than a beautiful bench or a couple of unexpected fashionable chairs at the front entrance.

Add a Great Seating Group

Create cozy places for family and guests to spend time by adding outdoor furniture such as wicker, wood or wrought iron chairs. To make the area feel more like an extension of your home, decorate in a style that matches the rest of the house.

Accessorize

Just like the rooms inside your home, outdoor living spaces can be accessorized to add style and details.

Outdoor pillows and footstools are an easy way to add a pop of color. Alternatively, use colors that match the plants growing in your garden.

Weather-resistant rugs in patterns ranging from subtle to bold create a soft surface underfoot and add great drama to your space

Create an elegant mood by using candles after dark.

Other accessory ideas include adding a water feature, vases, party lighting, a porch swing and a fire pit.

Does your space need some shade? You can do wonders with a beautiful canopy. Add a little extra with hanging lanterns from the canopy top.

Outdoor Entertaining

Don’t forget outdoor dining for evening meals or great parties. A more intimate and cozy area can be created for breakfast, coffee or tea time.

Have a gorgeous view from your backyard? Arrange your table setting to take advantage of Mother Nature’s decorating.

Outdoor Dining

Maximize space by using furnishing that convert when not being used for dining. Extra seating can be built into retaining walls and deck railings.

Outdoor kitchens can be just as versatile and elegant as their indoor cousins. Your choice of counter and backsplash will show off your personality, and lighting can create a focal point.

A few simple changes can make a big impact, so get out there and get decorating.

Ten must-dos to make your home spring-ready

The cold weather is almost done and we are about to welcome another season. Nothing says “hello, spring!” more than doing a few tweaks to the look of your house to prepare you for this wonderful and lovely temperature. Here are ten things you can do to spring-ify (yes, that’s a word) your home:

1. Get rid of clutter. Now is the perfect time to audit your things and start spring-cleaning. Group your things into three: Keep, Giveaway/Sell, Throw. My personal principle is, if something has never been used for a year, I will never find a use for it ever. Another tip: don’t get yourself overwhelmed by looking at all your stuff and imagining yourself tackling every single piece in one day. Do one area at a time and have a break every now and then. You can also sell some of your discoveries in thrift shops. More breathing room for your space, extra points for the money that you will earn.

2. Paint your walls. One of the most inexpensive things you can do to change a space while bringing in the biggest impact, painting a room can also give out a new vibe to your place. You would want the transformation to result into a more airy and fresher room. This means light and pastel colors are most welcome during this time.

3. Hang wall art. To bring in more color to your space, hanging wall art is one of the great techniques. Wall gallery, decals, framed mirrors—the options are endless. Bright and happy colors are the suggested tones for this season. Or why don’t you bring in some greens and flowers through your wall decorations? You can also make your own by painting something abstract.

4. Reupholster a pair of chairs. Since we are on the topic of starting anew, experiment and change up the look of your chairs. Be adventurous and look for a fabric that you have never tried before. Be sure to dress your chair up according to the season—swirls or leaves or light colors will do.

5. Add big, framed mirror. The principle behind this is simple—mirror reflects light. More light, more airy vibe. The perfect formula to a fresh spring experience.

bedroom

6. Add new large rug. Your rug sets the mood of your place. Changing yours up or adding one to your place can bring in a great impact to your room. Be wary and avoid dark colors. This can immediately suck up the light in your room. Having something too light, on the other, hand, may result to a rug that can easily get dirty. Find what suits your lifestyle the best. We suggest green, turquoise, or blue rugs for your room.

7. Add fresh cut flowers and greenery in colorful planter boxes. Spring means new life. Characterize this by bringing in living things in the form of cheerfully colored flowers and healthy-looking foliage of greens. Aside from enlivening up the room, it can also filter the air you breath.

textures

8. Rearrange furniture. This is my favorite thing to do no matter what season we are in. For rearranging specifically catered to spring, make sure your arrangement brings in great flow of activities by studying the layout of your furniture. Proper space programming is the key here. You want to make sure that your arrangement will bring in the most light and the most air.

9. Update lighting with new lamps. Accessories play a great role in changing the look of your room.

10. Change heavy dark draperies to light and airy sheets. Put away your heavy wooly curtains and blankets, and bring out your fresh, light, airy sheets in happy, spring colors like yellow, blue, or green.

There are so many things you can do to change up the look of your room to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring. Just remember that the key here is to let in the sun and keep everything light. Spring is a very fresh season. Take advantage of it!

Laundry Rooms

Laundry almost always tops the list of our least favorite chores. But just because we find laundry tedious and boring doesn’t mean laundry rooms have to be.

There are a number of ways to add style, interest and storage to the average, mundane laundry room.

Most laundry rooms are small. To make the room feel larger, stick to a light, neutral color palette. The same goes for any wood tones you use; keep them light.

If you’re looking for visual interest, you can always accent a wall with a darker color to add a spark of the dramatic. And if you’re looking to express your personality, try adding some playful wallpaper or a colorful backsplash to catch the eye.

If your room is small and you’d like to fool the eye into thinking it’s larger, paint the walls with wide horizontal strips around the room.

Many laundry rooms are dark. The right lighting helps you see and sets the tone for the room. Here are three ways to maximize lighting:

• Ceiling lights need to provide enough lighting for all the tasks which will be performed in the room.

• If you have cabinets over your appliances, install under-cabinetry lights. If you don’t have cabinets, install wall sconce lighting.

• Whenever possible, have windows line one entire wall of your laundry room. If you’re worried about privacy, install a beautiful privacy shade or wood blinds.

Have a laundry room that lacks privacy? You can create a door using draperies. You also could create a divider by installing barn-style doors on a track.

When space allows, opt for beautiful cabinetry. Not only is this useful, but it ties your Landry Room in with your design aesthetic in the rest of the house.

Here are some other storage solutions to help you make the most of your laundry room:.

Store supplies under your utility tub? Hide the mess by creating a skirt out of a fun, chic accent fabric.

Who says laundry rooms can’t be elegant? Use glass jars and decorative storage containers to store soap, fabric softener and other essentials.

laundry4

Don’t have space for folding? Install a countertop above your washer and dryer.

Get creative with your storage space. Use hanging baskets, hooks and shelving to create the storage you need. Consider hanging your sorting bags so they take up no floor space. If space is at a premium, extend shelves as close to the ceiling as possible.

How to Prevent Interior Design Mistakes

“Do it yourself” is a popular buzz phrase. You hear it in commercials for home-improvement stores and on television programs.

Do it yourself improvements are presented in a way that implies to the viewer that doing it yourself is easier and less expensive than hiring a professional interior designer. But, in reality, unless you are trained or extremely talented, do it yourself interior design could end up costing you money.

girlpainting

How? Let’s take a look at some examples of how you could end up spending more time and money correcting bad choices.

Paint: Homeowners often select the wrong paint color. Sometimes it is because they are afraid to use color and will instead paint their walls white and then be disappointed by the result. Other times, a paint color looks great in the store, but not so great on the wall.

Another common paint mistake is to select a paint color before selecting the furniture, carpeting and window treatments. It’s much easier to find paint that will match your fabric choices than the other way around.

Homeowners also forget to color coordinate and fail to create the right mood in a room. Interior designers are trained to make color choices that not only create the right mood, but create contrast.

Scale: Achieving the proper scale when it comes to furniture and accessories are a common problem. Homeowners are afraid to be bold with their design choices, or they choose furniture that is either too large or too small for the space.

In addition, homeowners often purchase furniture and accessories based on their appearance alone and will wonder why the piece doesn’t seem to fit in the space. The problem is failing to plan the room’s design elements before ever stepping foot in a store.

The same goes for accessories. There is an art to positioning accessories for scale and visual interest.

The position of furnishing and accessories, as well as the materials selected, can affect a space’s acoustics which in turn affects noise levels.

Breaking the bank: When homeowners hire an interior designer, the designer will keep budget in mind when making selections. Not so when homeowners make their own design choices. Not only don’t they know where to get the best prices, but they’ll make purchases based on feeling not price, quickly breaking the budget.

Creativity: Your newly designed room shouldn’t feel like a store showroom, yet often that’s what happens when you do it yourself. Interior designers know exactly what pieces to add to your space to create that feeling of comfort, warmth and intrigue.

glam

Interior designers also have an eye for creating a focal point in the room and for adding something unexpected to your space to take it from ordinary to fantastic.

The professional touch: Do it yourself when it comes to interior design and the end result might not be what you intended.

One common mistake is to hang pictures and paintings at the wrong level. Hanging art work at the wrong level not only makes it harder for people to look at it, it can affect the appearance of the room’s walls, making them appear shorter than they actually are.

Another common mistake is not allowing enough time for the entire project to come together. Rushing can lead to both costly mistakes and a space not turning out the way you envisioned or wanted. Large design projects are often done in phases to stay in budget.

Yet another common mistake is the belief that every empty space in a room needs to be filled. This can lead to a cluttered and cramped space where there is no place to relax and you’re bumping into furniture.

Here’s a great example below of how space can be used to give that WOW factor!

fun

Finally, do it yourselfers often fail to create the wow factor. And if your space doesn’t create a wow factor, why did you spend all your time and money on it? After all, isn’t great interior design all about knocking someone’s socks off?

Closets

Do you enjoy being fashionable? Do you take pride in your appearance? Is looking and feeling great important to you?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then making sure you extend and protect your wardrobe is essential.

Where you store your clothes and accessories is just as important as how you wear them. Closet space should be organized so you can find what you want quickly and easily. But what if your closet is drab and disorganized? Don’t despair. Fortunately, there are several, easy solutions.

londoncloset
London Loft Closet by LA Closet Design

If closet organization is a problem, start by installing a closet organization system. These are available in a variety of styles and price points. If you’re organizing a child’s closet, you may want to consider rods that adjust as the child grows.

You’ll also want to identify your trouble spots, areas of your closet that always seem to be in disarray. What items do you need more space for? The solution might be as easy as rearranging where items are hung, or you may need to add more shelves or hanging space.

You’ll also want to consider getting rid of items you no longer wear. Generally, if you haven’t worn a garment or used an accessory in a year, it’s time to get rid of it. Consider donating to charity after a couple of years.
Dress for Success is a great charity in the local area that could make good use of your unwanted items.

Special-occasion clothing can be moved to a secondary or coat closet so it’s there when you need it and out of the way when you don’t.

Make your closet colorful by organizing clothing by color and by season. That way you’ll always be able to find your favorite shirt.

Some items such as denim, sweaters, workout wear and t-shirts can be folded and stored on closet shelves instead of hung on racks. Small accessories such as ties and belts also can be stored on shelves in small baskets.

belts
ORG home closet

Protect your clothing by using plastic or wooden hangers that are all the same color and style. Never use wire hangers.

And don’t forget your purses and shoes.

Purses can be displayed decoratively on a coat rack or pinned to a folding screen. If your closet is too small for this, opt instead to display your purses on a shelf or inside decorative baskets.

Shoes can also be stored in baskets or displayed on shelves. Other options include hanging shoes on racks on the wall, hanging shoe pockets and using wall-hung magazine racks.

Finally, once your closet is organized, it’s time to accessorize. Add a new lighting fixture to your closet, a mirror or a decorative rug then celebrate a job well done and a beautiful closet.

Welcoming Guests for the Holidays

Holiday season is fast approaching and You get a phone call. Friends will be visiting. Panic sets in. How do you get ready? But no need to worry. Just follow these easy tips before your guests arrive to prepare the guest bedroom and bathroom.

bath

You always want your guests to feel at home and there’s nothing more welcoming than a cosy, luxurious bedroom and bathroom. Add a little of your personal flair and special touches can turn an average room into a spa like sanctuary.

Tips
Fresh flowers, scented soap, candles or potpourri can make an otherwise dull room come alive. Other touches include leaving empty hangers in the closet and providing a suitcase stand.

For a good night’s sleep, invest in some extra pillows and a cozy, luxurious blanket. And don’t forget those extra blankets, too, in case they are needed.

Many people think a morning shower is the best way to wake up. When they walk out of the shower, provide your guests with 100-percent Egyptian cotton towels. And because it seems someone always forgets to bring something, set out a basket of toiletries. Include the basics such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, shampoo and a razor.

houzzbath

But there is more to making guests feel at home than an inviting bedroom and bath.

Everyone like surprises, so why not add the following:

• A map of the area. There is nothing worse than getting lost. Include a list of local attractions, restaurants and, gas stations.

• Maybe your guests just want to stay put. Then think reading material, such as the entertainment section of the local newspaper along with paperbacks.

• Not everyone is a electronics genius, so if the guest room has complicated electronics, write a how-to guide.

• Make sure the bedroom stays at least semi-neat by providing a hamper. This way guests can stash their dirty towels and linens in a centralized location.

• Most people like a schedule and your guests probably no different. If you’ll be working or otherwise unavailable some of the time when guests are in town, provide them with a schedule. Also include a list of contact and emergency numbers.

So the next time friends and family come to visit, follow these tips and be ready and confident.

Lighting our Homes Beautifully

Lighting does much more than illuminate our homes. It illuminates our mood.
Can you believe the fall season is here! We all get a little overwhelmed when someone mentions kids going back to school, falling leaves, not too mention the holidays. It’s time to come inside and really enjoy our homes. Would you be interested in making some big changes in your décor without much effort? Sometimes it is really the simple things that make the biggest impact.

table3

Did you know lighting could really affect the way people feel in your home? How your rooms are lit should have as much consideration as the wall colors you’ve chosen. Lighting is much more than a necessity; it sets the tone for your entire home.

The best way to get that perfect ambiance is through layering several different kinds of lighting. At least three layers should be used in every room. Let’s start with the ceiling lights. Most people think recess lights or chandeliers should be bright and full on. Overhead light can be very harsh and shadowy causing colors to look uneven and some times flat, so controlling them on dimmers is a must. A mixture of floor and table lamps along with your controlled overhead lights can really soften the feel of your space. The colors in your upholstery fabrics and rugs will appear more rich and vibrant. Everything starts to look anew.

Have an architectural feature or piece of art you’d love to show off? Try accent lighting. Some examples might be wall sconces, inside cabinet lights, picture lights or a floor upward spot light. Let us not forget candlelight with its warm and beautiful glow.

chandelier

Ever try to read or apply your make up using one source of light? It’s uncomfortable and some times difficult. You can feel the eyestrain coming on. Always use task lighting for those types of activities. Add desk or vanity lighting designed to give you that direct light.

blacklamp

Lighting should vary from room to room. Even the shape, color and texture of your lampshades will affect how light is diffused. Spend some time playing with different colors in light bulbs. I am not talking about the 60’s blue lights. There are softer colors available that emit totally different feels for your spaces.

The Yellow Brick Road to Your Home

The Yellow Brick Road to Your Home

Yellow is a vibrant and exciting color that is used on fashion runways to evoke a sunshine-y vibe. You really have to be careful when choosing this color because it can make or break your outfit.

interior design 1

Yellow is a color that is hard to ignore. In fact, when used in your home, as in fashion, it commands your attention. The color reflects a fresh and happy time,  so it’s great in your wardrobe in the spring and summer months. This is also true when it comes to your home décor although if you want it all-year-round, nobody is stopping you, right?

Yellow is a color of empowerment. It evokes enthusiasm and is meant to awaken confidence. If used correctly, it is highly noticeable which is why it is the color used for pedestrian crossings. Yellow is also known to be the “intellectual color”, it is uplifting to the spirits and brings about joyful emotions. I am not saying that when you see yellow you want to break out in song and dance but it can bring about a smile.

When used alongside the color red, it becomes an appetizing color. In fact, many fast food chains adopt this color scheme for their logos.

interior design 2

Now that we understand a little more about yellow, where do we want to use this color in your home?

interior design 3

The first obvious answer would be in the dining room or kitchenette area.  It is suppose to encourage the appetite, though I must admit I don’t need much help in that area. This is really good news since most of the activities in today’s homes  are done in the comfy areas where we casually dine. For some, the dining room area is now a secondary family room.  Who wouldn’t want to have their family enjoy a great meal in a happy room?

This wall color in your living or family room would let everyone know that the people in this home take “having fun” seriously.

You might not think to use such a stimulating color in the a bedroom, it’s actually great when used as small pops of color. You can use it in pillows, lamps, art and others accessories.

Now that I have suggested the application of yellow in your home, don’t you want a bit of sunshine in your space, too? Are you holding a paint can now and longing to color your front entrance door that perfect color? How about your cabinets, maybe? Please do tell.
